Adamawa State Governor Fintiri Declares Three-Day Mourning

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has declared three days of mourning across the state following the death of former Governor of Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur.

Fintiri announced the mourning period in a message shared on social media on Saturday .

The governor described Tukur as an elder statesman whose contributions to Adamawa State and Nigeria would not be forgotten.

“It is with deep sadness that I mourn the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, former Governor of Gongola State and an elder statesman whose contributions to our state and nation will remain indelible,” the governor wrote.

According to Fintiri, all government flags across Adamawa will be flown at half-mast throughout the three-day mourning period as a mark of respect for the late statesman.

“In his honour and in recognition of his selfless service, I have declared three days of mourning across Adamawa State, during which all government flags will fly at half-mast,” he said.

The governor also extended his condolences to Tukur’s family, associates and residents of Adamawa State, saying they were sharing in the grief caused by the death of the former governor.

“My heart goes out to his family, associates, and the good people of our state during this period of grief,” Fintiri said.

He prayed for the repose of Tukur’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus.

Tukur, a prominent politician and businessman, died on Saturday at the age of 90, according to a statement issued by his family.

The statement, signed by his son, Hon. Awwal D. Tukur, on behalf of the family, said the former PDP chairman had “returned to his Creator” after a lifetime devoted to public service, business and community development.

The family described Tukur as a man whose service extended beyond his immediate family to Adamawa State and Nigeria, adding that his wisdom, generosity and commitment to national development had touched many lives.

It said his contributions would remain part of his legacy and continue to be remembered by generations to come.

The family also thanked Nigerians and others who had offered prayers, condolences and support following his death. It said details of the funeral prayer and burial arrangements would be announced later.

Tukur would have turned 91 on September 15. He was one of the major political figures to emerge from Adamawa and played significant roles in Nigeria’s political and economic affairs over several decades.

He served as national chairman of the PDP from March 2012 until January 2014. His tenure at the helm of the opposition party came during a period of intense political activity in the country.

Before becoming PDP national chairman, Tukur had held several public and private-sector positions. He served as Minister of Industries during the military administration of former Head of State General Sani Abacha and was also involved in business and economic development initiatives.

In 2012, he served as president of the Africa Business Roundtable, reflecting his long-standing involvement in efforts aimed at promoting business and private-sector development across the continent.

Tukur had also served as governor of the former Gongola State, which covered areas that later became Adamawa and Taraba states, further establishing his place in the political history of the region.
