Two escape death as truck overturns on Lagos-Ikeja road

At least two people narrowly escaped death on Saturday after a 20-foot container truck overturned following a collision with another truck at New Garage, along Ikorodu Road in the Ojota area of Lagos State.
The accident, which involved a truck with registration number SUL 460 ZY, caused significant traffic disruption on the busy road.
The truck was reportedly carrying three people when the incident occurred.
Confirming the accident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said the container truck collided with a flat-body truck whose driver allegedly fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.
He said the impact of the collision caused the container-laden vehicle to overturn, leaving about half of the carriageway obstructed.
Oke-Osanyintolu further disclosed that the collision also damaged a high-tension electricity pole, causing power cables to fall across the road.
He said the fallen cables created additional danger and temporarily made the affected section inaccessible to motorists, pedestrians and emergency personnel.
According to him, two occupants of the truck sustained injuries in the crash.
The driver’s assistant reportedly suffered serious injuries to the head and chest, in addition to multiple bruises, while the driver sustained injuries to his mouth and shoulder.
Following the incident, emergency responders from the Lagos State Government moved in to provide immediate medical assistance to the victims.
LASEMA and the Lagos State Ambulance Service administered first aid and advanced medical care at the scene to stabilise the injured persons before further treatment.
Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were also deployed to manage the traffic situation and assist with the response operation.
Staff of Ikeja Electric equally arrived at the scene to secure and manage the electricity cables that had fallen onto the road following the damage to the high-tension pole.
The authorities continued efforts to clear the obstruction and restore normal movement along the affected section of Ikorodu Road.
