Rivers Govt denies owing Nigerian Legion

The Rivers State Government says it has no outstanding financial commitments to the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State Chapter, and has described contrary claims as untrue.
The government made its position known in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday by Juliana Masi, Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
Masi said the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has continued to provide support to the Nigerian Legion and remains concerned about the welfare of veterans, ex-servicemen, widows and relatives of fallen military personnel.
She explained that the governor had fulfilled the commitment he made earlier this year during the Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration.
“Governor Siminalayi Fubara has fully redeemed the pledge made during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration,” she said.
The state government consequently called on members of the public to disregard reports alleging that it owes the Rivers State Chapter of the Nigerian Legion money from previous donations or pledges.
It also reaffirmed its intention to continue supporting the Legion and programmes aimed at improving the welfare and dignity of veterans and their families, while recognising the sacrifices made by fallen heroes.
