Prince Harry to leave board of African Parks conservation nonprofit

LONDON — Prince Harry is stepping down as a trustee of African Parks, a nonprofit organization that manages protected areas in partnership with authorities in 13 countries from Chad to Zimbabwe.
Harry, who last week announced he and his family were returning to live in the U.K., left the board of trustees after 10 years of service to the organization, a spokesperson for the prince confirmed on Monday.
African Parks said in a statement dated Aug. 19 that the prince’s departure was part of a “governance refresh” in which a Kenyan Supreme Court justice and the president of AGRA, which helps small farmers in Africa, will join the board. The changes take effect Sept. 30.
Harry’s departure comes four months after the Indigenous rights group Survival International called on him to resign after it alleged human rights abuses by rangers employed by African Parks. Previously, the prince left Sentebale, the charity he co-founded to fight poverty and AIDS in southern Africa, in March 2025 after relations with the organization’s chair broke down.
“We extend our thanks to all the members of the Board who generously volunteer their time in support of our conservation mission – and particularly to The Duke of Sussex, for a decade of committed service to African Parks,” Vas Narasimhan, chair of the African Parks board, said in a statement.
Harry and his wife, Meghan, stepped aside from royal duties when they moved to the U.S. They will not return to royal duties and are expected to live in a non-royal residence outside London.
