Nigerian Law School confirms death of 23-year-old student in Lagos

The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, following a fall from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos campus.

The institution said Alayande was temporarily staying at the Lagos campus while undertaking a programme in the state.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.

According to the Law School, the incident occurred at approximately 4am on Friday, August 7, 2026, when Alayande reportedly fell from the hostel rooftop and died from injuries sustained in the incident.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.

Alayande was originally a student of the Nigerian Law School’s Enugu Campus but had been provided accommodation at the Lagos Campus for the period of her externship.

The institution said it was collaborating with the relevant authorities and the deceased’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” it stated.

The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the student’s death, saying the hostel matron reported the incident after Alayande was found unresponsive within the premises.

The police said officers visited the scene and subsequently evacuated her remains to a morgue, while an investigation was commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Earlier reports had indicated that a hostel mate and a relative of the deceased allegedly found a note believed to have been written by Alayande before they began searching for her. She was subsequently found unresponsive following the reported fall.

However, the Nigerian Law School did not provide further details concerning the circumstances that preceded the incident.

Expressing its grief over the loss, the institution extended its condolences to Alayande’s family, colleagues and others affected by her death.

“The Management extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, colleagues and all those affected by this distressing incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

The Law School also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the family’s wish for privacy as they come to terms with the loss.

It urged the public to honour the family’s request and avoid actions or commentary that could deepen their grief during the difficult period.

The institution reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and wellbeing of its students and staff.
