Niger warns illegal miners of arrest, prosecution

The Niger State government has ordered all individuals, groups and companies involved in illegal mining activities to stop immediately or face arrest and prosecution.

The warning was issued by the state’s Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammed Danjuma, who said the government is determined to clean up the mining sector and enforce all laws regulating mineral exploration and extraction.

Danjuma said no person or organisation is permitted to carry out mining activities without the required licences and approvals from the relevant authorities.

He described illegal mining as a serious threat to the environment, public safety and the state’s economy. According to him, the activities also deprive the government and host communities of the revenue and benefits associated with properly regulated mining operations.

The commissioner said the Ministry of Mineral Resources has intensified surveillance of mining sites across the state in partnership with security agencies and regulatory bodies to identify and arrest illegal operators.

He warned that anyone caught mining without a valid licence or official approval would be prosecuted.

“The government will not tolerate activities that undermine efforts to regulate the mining sector and ensure its contribution to sustainable development,” Danjuma said.

He urged investors and prospective miners to follow due process by obtaining the necessary licences and permits before commencing operations.

Danjuma also called on traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to support the government’s efforts by reporting illegal mining activities to the relevant authorities for prompt action.

He said the state remains committed to building a transparent, responsible and sustainable mining industry capable of attracting genuine investors, creating jobs and boosting economic growth.

The commissioner assured licensed mining operators of the government’s continued support, while stressing that all mining activities must comply with environmental and regulatory standards.

He added that the Ministry of Mineral Resources would continue to enforce mining regulations, warning that anyone who violates the law would face the full consequences.
