A survey of University of Ibadan students has revealed mixed perceptions of the transparency and effectiveness of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme.

The survey, conducted by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, found that 57.4 per cent of respondents rated the transparency of the NELFUND disbursement process as either moderately transparent or not transparent.

According to the findings, 46.7 per cent described the process as “Moderately Transparent”, while 10.7 per cent said it was “Not Transparent”. Only 14.4 per cent considered the process “Very Transparent”, while 27.5 per cent rated it “Transparent”.

On overall satisfaction with NELFUND, 46.9 per cent of respondents said they were either satisfied or very satisfied. This comprised 36 per cent who were satisfied and 10.9 per cent who were very satisfied.

Another 44.4 per cent rated their satisfaction as moderate, while 7.6 per cent expressed some level of dissatisfaction — 4.6 per cent dissatisfied and three per cent very dissatisfied.

The DAWN Commission said the findings were based on a survey of students at the University of Ibadan and formed part of its assessment of student experiences with the NELFUND scheme.

The survey highlights the need for greater transparency and improved communication around the disbursement process, even as nearly half of the respondents expressed satisfaction with the scheme.
