LASEPA seals 11 establishments in Lagos over persistent environmental violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, has sealed 11 establishments across Agege and Mushin areas of Lagos State over persistent violations of environmental regulations.

The agency said the exercise, carried out on Tuesday, followed repeated warnings, abatement notices and several opportunities given to the affected establishments to comply with its directives.

According to LASEPA, the enforcement was conducted in line with the Lagos State Government’s directive to ensure adherence to environmental laws, safeguard public health and maintain a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for residents.

LASEPA said the affected facilities had violated various environmental regulations and failed to carry out the corrective measures earlier issued by the Agency.

In Mushin, the Agency sealed six establishments over different environmental offences.

They include: Akorohunfayo Central Mosque, located on Akorohunfayo Street, Fadeyi, Mushin, which was sealed over noise pollution.

Holy Temple of Christ, located on Ayetoro Street, behind NIPCO Filling Station, Mushin, was sealed for noise pollution.

Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi, Mushin, and Christ Apostolic Church (Oye Iyanu), located at Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire, were similarly sealed over noise pollution.

Biolarique Bakery Academy, located on Mushin Road, Mushin, was sealed for non-compliance with the Agency’s directives, while Tiles & Marbles, located on Silver Street, Olorunsogo, Mushin, was shut over air pollution.

The Agency also sealed five scrap yards in Agege and Mushin over environmental infractions, including lack of evidence of an E-Waste Permit, environmental pollution and failure to comply with LASEPA directives.

The affected scrap yards are Abubakar Scrap, Pipeline, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege; Benjamin Scrap Yard, Oko Oba, Ladoje Street, Agege; Starlas and Sons Scrap Yard, Oko Oba, Ladoje Street, Agege; Jamin Scrap Yard, Jungle Bus Stop, Iju Road, Agege; and Scrap Yard, Olu Aina Street, Daleko, Mushin.

Commenting on the enforcement exercise, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to protecting public health and preserving the environment through regular monitoring, enforcement and implementation of environmental regulations across Lagos State.

“Environmental compliance remains a collective responsibility, noting that the Agency would continue to intensify enforcement actions against individuals, businesses, religious organisations, and corporate bodies whose activities pose risks to the environment and public health,” Dr Ajayi stressed.

He called on business owners, facility operators, religious bodies, scrap dealers and residents to adopt responsible environmental practices, secure the required permits and approvals, adhere to relevant regulations and work with LASEPA towards achieving a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos.
