Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that new signing Giannis Konstantelias will be sidelined for several months after suffering a serious knee injury just one day after making his Bundesliga debut.

The 23-year-old Greek midfielder sustained an ACL tear in his left knee during Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV on Saturday, with the club confirming the extent of the injury on Sunday.

Konstantelias had enjoyed an impressive debut before the setback, scoring Dortmund’s second goal shortly before half-time and producing a strong performance after joining the club from PAOK earlier this month.

The midfielder was forced off shortly after the restart following a challenge with HSV winger Bakery Jatta. Konstantelias immediately held his left knee and required a substitution, with subsequent examinations confirming the ligament injury.

The setback is a major blow for Dortmund, who had high expectations for their new recruit following his arrival from PAOK. The Greece international signed a contract with the Bundesliga club until June 2031.

His lengthy absence could also influence Dortmund’s plans before the close of the transfer window. With Konstantelias expected to spend several months on the sidelines, head coach Niko Kovač and sporting director Lars Ricken are considering whether the squad needs another addition.

However, Dortmund have yet to make a final decision on whether to bring in a replacement for the injured midfielder.
