The Tottenham Hotspur defender, previously the third-choice captain behind Messi and Nicolás Otamendi, has now been elevated to the role with the backing of both head coach Lionel Scaloni and his teammates.
According to Leadership, Romero has emerged as one of the strongest voices in Argentina’s dressing room, with his vocal presence and aggressive defensive style establishing him as a prominent leader within the squad.

His appointment also reflects the defender’s growing influence in the national team since becoming a key component of Scaloni’s side.
Romero’s leadership qualities had previously earned praise from Messi, who highlighted his importance to Argentina’s defensive strength and described his contribution as “extraordinary”.
The captaincy comes after Messi’s decision to end a 21-year international career, leaving Romero with the responsibility of leading a team that has enjoyed a remarkable run of success.
Argentina have won three major international titles under Scaloni , the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa America, with Messi playing a central role in the team’s transformation into one of international football’s dominant sides.
