Badejo-Okusanya Inaugurated As First Elected Female NBA President
Her predecessor, Afam Osigwe (SAN), handed over to Badejo-Okusanya and conducted the swearing-in ceremony at the High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Badejo-Okusanya becomes the first woman to be elected president of the NBA, 35 years after Priscilla Kuye, then First Vice-President of the association, assumed the presidency following the appointment of the then NBA President, Clement Akpamgbo, as Attorney-General of the Federation.
She emerged after a keenly contested and controversial election and, in her inaugural remarks, extended an olive branch to her fellow contestants, seeking the support and cooperation of all members to move the association forward.
The new NBA president pledged to lead an inclusive association, declaring:
“I will be the President of one Bar.”
Badejo-Okusanya was accompanied at the ceremony by her mother, Clara Olumide; her husband, Yomi; her sister, Jumoke Oduwole, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment; as well as family members, legal practitioners, Bar leaders from Nigeria and abroad, and other dignitaries.
Her inauguration marks a historic milestone for the NBA and the Nigerian legal profession.
