Badejo-Okusanya Begins Tenure As 33rd NBA President, Pledges Stronger Bar

The 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has pledged to build a bolder and stronger Nigerian Bar, with a commitment to ensuring that lawyers feel seen, protected and empowered during her tenure.

Badejo-Okusanya disclosed this in a statement posted on her X handle on Friday, August 28, 2026, following her inauguration as president of the association.

Reflecting on her journey within the Nigerian legal profession, the new NBA president said she had witnessed the transfer of leadership to successive presidents when she first attended the association’s Annual General Conference.

“Twenty-four years after I attended my first Annual General Conference as a newly called lawyer and watched the baton of leadership pass to a new President, I stood before the same Association today to receive it myself,” she said.

Badejo-Okusanya said she accepted the responsibility with gratitude to previous leaders and humility for the confidence reposed in her.

“I receive this office with gratitude for those who ran before me, humility for the trust placed in me, and a solemn determination to run my own leg faithfully,” she said.

She pledged to use her tenure to strengthen the association while ensuring that lawyers feel adequately represented and supported.

The NBA president said her goal was to leave the association stronger at the end of her tenure.

“May it be said, when this tenure is over, that the Bar became bolder; that lawyers felt seen, protected and empowered; and that we left the Nigerian Bar Association stronger than we met it,” she said.

Badejo-Okusanya, who signed the statement as the “33rd President, Nigerian Bar Association”, declared that her administration would begin its work immediately.

“The work begins today,” she said.

Her predecessor, Afam Osigwe (SAN), handed over to Badejo-Okusanya and conducted the swearing-in ceremony at the High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
