The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old suspected drug dealer, Chinedu Nwankwo, and recovered illicit drugs estimated at ₦5.8 million in Otuocha.
The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Team during an intelligence-driven patrol along the Nteje–Otuocha Road.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to Ikenga, the operatives recovered a large quantity of suspected Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine and Colorado, popularly known as Colos, from the suspect.
Preliminary investigation showed that Nwankwo was allegedly transporting the substances to Otuocha, Anyamelium, Nzam, Umuleri and Aguleri for delivery to suspected criminal elements.
The police said investigators were also examining the alleged connection between the drug consignments and activities capable of disrupting the ongoing Local Government Council elections in the state.
“The suspect and recovered exhibits are currently in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s activities and identify other persons who may be connected to the alleged network,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the operatives for their vigilance and sustained patrols, particularly during the election period.
Ama warned that illicit drugs could contribute to criminal activities by providing resources and emboldening individuals involved in violent crimes.
“Illicit drugs remain among the factors that can fuel criminality,” the commissioner said, noting that drug trafficking and abuse could facilitate violent and other forms of crime.
The CP directed officers to sustain intelligence-led operations and targeted raids on suspected criminal hideouts and other locations of interest across the state.
He said the operations would be conducted in collaboration with sister security agencies to prevent criminal activities and “nip them in the bud.”
The Command assured residents of its commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting the integrity of the electoral process across the state.
