The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has joined top defence, intelligence and security chiefs at the inaugural meeting of a high-level committee tasked with developing a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence and Security Operations Plan for Nigeria.
The committee was established following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the country’s strategic preparedness and develop a coordinated response to emerging national security threats.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, was chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

It brought together the Minister of Defence, the Minister of State for Defence, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and heads of intelligence and security agencies.
The Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa (rtd), is serving as the committee’s coordinator and will provide its secretariat.
The initiative is aimed at developing a coordinated, proactive and forward-looking national security framework by bringing together the expertise of Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security institutions.
The plan is expected to provide a strategic framework for assessing evolving threats and improving the country’s capacity to prevent and respond effectively to security challenges.
A statement by the Nigerian Air Force said Aneke’s participation underscored the service’s commitment to “jointness, inter-agency collaboration and the strategic employment of air power” in support of Nigeria’s national defence and security objectives.
The committee’s work is expected to strengthen coordination among the various security institutions while ensuring that national security planning is based on a comprehensive assessment of emerging threats and long-term strategic requirements.
