Nigerian Students Win Gold at 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in China

A team of Nigerian students has emerged as the overall winner in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China, earning the prestigious Gold Award.
The victorious Team Nigeria comprised Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf. The students outshone competitors from Asia, Africa, the United States, China, and Canada during the international competition, which was held from July 14 to 19.
The championship also attracted participants from several African nations, including Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, making the victory a remarkable achievement for the Nigerian team.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the feat in a statement shared on its official Facebook page, celebrating the students’ outstanding performance on the global stage.
Before the tournament, the organisers had expressed confidence in the team, describing the students as brilliant, articulate, and exceptionally talented. Following their triumph, they praised the team’s determination, resilience, and commitment to academic excellence.
According to the organisers, the students began their journey through the Nigeria Spelling Bee competition before qualifying for the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where they earned the opportunity to represent the continent at the World Cup.
In a related development, Ar-Raheem International College revealed that two of its students were among the four-member Nigerian team that secured the gold medal, describing the achievement as a proud moment for the institution and the country.
The victory further highlights Nigeria’s growing reputation for academic excellence and strong performance in international educational competitions.
