The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, has sealed six iron and steel manufacturing companies in the Odogunyan Industrial Layout, Ikorodu, over alleged environmental violations as part of efforts to enforce compliance with environmental regulations across the state.

A statement by the agency said the enforcement exercise was carried out by the agency’s Enforcement Team following the directive of the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.

According to LASEPA, the operation forms part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing commitment to protecting public health and ensuring strict compliance with environmental laws.

The affected companies are Germini Steel Nigeria Limited, Top Steel Nigeria Limited, Pulkit Alloy Nigeria Limited, Landcraft Steel Nigeria Limited, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Limited and African Steel Nigeria Limited.

The agency said the action followed the discovery of several environmental infractions during its inspection of the facilities.

According to LASEPA, the violations included the emission of brown dust, black dust, mill scale, shredded dust, dead dust and non-metallic particulate matter, all of which pose serious risks to air quality, public health and the surrounding environment.

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws across Lagos State.

“Industrial operators must adopt sustainable production processes and install effective pollution control measures to prevent harmful emissions into the environment,” he said.

Dr. Ajayi also said the Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting residents from the harmful effects of industrial pollution and would continue to take firm action against facilities that fail to comply with approved environmental standards.

He also advised industries to fully comply with environmental laws, stating that this is necessary to achieve sustainable industrial growth while protecting the health and well-being of Lagos residents.
