Stakeholders explain how Nigeria can end insecurity, ethnic profiling

Published

Stakeholders and security experts have put forward solutions to insecurity and ethnic profiling in Nigeria.

This comes as Nigeria battles kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other insecurity threats that have wreaked havoc on Nigeria in the last three months.

Recall that bombing and mass abduction have resurged in Africa’s most populous country with the tragedy of Oyo school children who are still in their abductors’ captivity in mind.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria lost at least seven military commanders in recent time.

While the Nigerian military has doubled up efforts to nip the insecurity in the bud, the menace persists.

As a solution, popular security expert Kabiru Adamu and retired Nigerian army commander Brigadier-General Saleh announced two national draft toolkits to tackle insecurity in an event Wednesday.

The stakeholders argued that two toolkits, namely the Anti-Ethnic Profiling and Stereotyping Toolkit for Security Communication and a corresponding framework for media communication, would help tackle insecurity in Nigeria.

On his part, Bala said threats such as misinformation, disinformation, artificial intelligence misuse, and online hate speech were also incorporated into the national draft.

He noted that communication can either promote peace or deepen divisions.

Also speaking, Kabiru Adamu urged the Nigerian government and stakeholders to ensure the documents are implemented rather than left unused.

Similarly, a renowned mass communication professor, Umaru Pate, described the national draft as a strategic step toward addressing insecurity and strengthening cooperation between the media and security institutions.
