South Africa’s dream of reaching the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday after a 1-0 defeat to Canada, triggering a flood of reactions across social media. While many supporters expressed disappointment over the result, others applauded Bafana Bafana for reaching the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history.

The defeat quickly became one of the biggest talking points online, with fans across Africa and beyond debating South Africa’s performance. Many described the campaign as a significant milestone for African football, praising Hugo Broos’ side for exceeding expectations despite their painful exit.

Across X, the slang “Go Bek” rapidly began trending as users reacted to South Africa’s elimination. The phrase, often used online to mock rivals after defeats, dominated conversations as memes, jokes and banter flooded the platform, although several users urged fans to acknowledge South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign rather than ridicule the team.

Nollywood actor Charles Awurum joined the online banter, posting: “Go home and take care of your job and women.”

Content creator KDC Global wrote: “South Africa can now go bek and fight for their jobs 😂😂😂 | Canada 1-0 South Africa.”

Reality TV star and former BBNaija housemate Groovy also reacted, posting: “TIME TO GO BEK!”

Not all reactions were celebratory. X user Nandi questioned the response from fellow Africans, writing: “I hope the rest of Africa is happy now that South Africa has been knocked out of the World Cup. Was this really what you wanted?”

Another user, Oyiga Micheal, mocked South Africa’s tournament record, posting: “South Africa came to the World Cup only to break records: First team to concede a goal. First team to get two red cards in one game. First team to lose a match. First team knocked out of the Round of 32. Gbafanaaa Gbafanaaa!!!😂 Pack your bags and go bek to your Kantri.”

Similarly, UnitedEra celebrated Canada’s victory, writing: “Thank you canadaaaaa 😁🇨🇦 Southafrica go bek to your kantry and fight for your jobs.”

Despite the online trolling, many football fans maintained that South Africa’s campaign represented a major step forward for the national team, with Bafana Bafana leaving the tournament having made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
