England’s hopes of securing top spot in Group L suffered a setback after a resilient Ghana side held them to a 0-0 draw in a tightly contested World Cup encounter at the Gillette Stadium near Boston.

Despite dominating possession and registering 19 shots compared to Ghana’s two, Thomas Tuchel’s men failed to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Black Stars defence and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who produced several important saves to preserve the point.

The result leaves both teams on four points with one group-stage match remaining. While qualification for the knockout rounds appears within reach for both nations, the battle for first place in the group remains wide open heading into the final round of fixtures.

England entered the contest buoyed by their 4-2 victory over Croatia but struggled to replicate that attacking fluency. Harry Kane was kept quiet throughout the match, while wide players Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon were unable to unlock Ghana’s compact defensive setup.

Ghana, now under the guidance of Carlos Queiroz, delivered another organised display following their opening win over Panama. The Black Stars defended resolutely and occasionally threatened on the counterattack, with substitute Prince Adu causing concern for England’s backline late in the game.

England’s best chance arrived in the closing stages when Nico O’Reilly headed against the crossbar after Bukayo Saka had been denied by Asare. Kane also fired over from a promising position as the Three Lions pushed unsuccessfully for a winner. The draw extends England’s unbeaten World Cup record against African opposition and leaves them needing a positive result against Panama in their final group match to secure progression and potentially top the group.
