The French government has expressed regret over Burkina Faso‘s decision to unilaterally sever diplomatic relations with Paris, describing the move as “hostile and baseless” while warning that reciprocal measures are being considered.
This was contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson for France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on June 26, 2026.
According to the statement, French authorities took note of Burkina Faso’s decision to cut diplomatic ties, saying the action reflects what it described as a worrying shift in the conduct of the country’s leadership.
“The French authorities note Burkina Faso’s unilateral decision to break off diplomatic relations with France,” the statement read.
It added: “France regrets this hostile and baseless decision, which illustrates the worrying drift in the Burkinabe authorities’ behaviour. The necessary reciprocal measures are currently being considered.”
Despite the diplomatic fallout, France reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso, stressing that the longstanding relationship between the citizens of both countries remains important.

“France reiterates its solidarity with Burkina Faso’s population and recalls the close ties uniting our two peoples,” the statement said.
The French government also disclosed that it was taking steps to ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff and nationals residing in Burkina Faso following the breakdown in relations.
“The French authorities are paying special attention to the safety of the State personnel who are in the country and of the French community living in Burkina Faso,” the ministry stated.
It further urged French citizens in Burkina Faso to exercise heightened caution.
“In these special circumstances, they call on French nationals to increase their vigilance,” the statement added.
The latest development marks a further deterioration in relations between France and Burkina Faso, which have become increasingly strained in recent years amid growing political and security tensions in the West African nation.
