BVAS Failures Stall Voting in Ado-Ekiti as Frustrated Voters Endure Long Delays
Secrets Reporters
Technical failures involving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) disrupted voting at a major polling unit in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, raising fresh concerns about the readiness of electoral technology in the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election.
At Polling Unit 018, located in the open space opposite the Federal Polytechnic, accreditation and voting reportedly commenced at about 8:30 a.m. as scheduled. However, what began as an orderly exercise soon descended into frustration as the BVAS devices repeatedly malfunctioned.
The polling unit, with a registered voting population of 884, witnessed growing queues as voters waited for electoral officials to resolve recurring technical glitches that slowed the accreditation process.
When SecretsReporters visited the polling station around 11:45 a.m., dozens of voters remained stranded in line under the scorching sun, with accreditation proceeding only intermittently due to the unstable performance of the BVAS machines.
Several voters expressed disappointment over the delays, questioning why technical problems continue to plague elections despite repeated assurances from electoral authorities about improvements in election technology.
The development raises concerns about the possibility of voter disenfranchisement, particularly for elderly persons, workers, and others who may be unable to remain at polling units for extended periods.
Observers note that while election officials were present and attempting to address the challenges, the persistent malfunction of accreditation devices significantly slowed the process and threatened to undermine public confidence in the exercise.
The incident comes amid heightened expectations for a credible governorship election in Ekiti State, where electoral authorities have repeatedly emphasized the role of technology in ensuring transparency and reducing electoral malpractice.
As voting continues across the state, stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the situation and assess whether similar technical challenges are occurring in other polling units.
SecretsReporters will continue to monitor developments from polling stations across Ekiti State and provide updates as events unfold.
