The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has taken decisive action in response to the escalating cholera outbreak across Nigeria, activating its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) as the death toll climbs to 53.
In an official update shared on its X platform on Monday, the NCDC underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “Following a dynamic risk assessment of the #cholera epidemiological situation which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, we have activated the National #Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).”
According to the latest figures as of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases have been reported across 31 states, with fatalities now standing at 53.
In a related development, the Ogun State Government reported one confirmed death and 25 cases of cholera within its jurisdiction.
Tomi Coker, the Ogun State Health Commissioner, disclosed this information in Abeokuta on Monday, highlighting that the affected individual was from Ijebu North local government area.
Coker further outlined that comprehensive measures have been put in place across all 20 local government areas of Ogun State, including free surveillance and emergency treatment services.
The areas most affected by the outbreak include Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Obafemi/Owode, Ijebu North, Ado, and Odo/OTA local government areas.
The activation of the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre reflects the NCDC’s commitment to containing the spread of the disease and mitigating its impact on affected communities nationwide.
