THE South-South regional chapter of the All Progressive Party (APC) has issued a statement urging President Bola Tinubu to run for re-election as president in the 2027 presidential election.
This statement was released in a joint communiqué signed by the APC Congress South-South Zonal Executive following a meeting in Calabar, Cross Rivers, yesterday.
The communique lauded Tinubu for his policies, projects, and programs, specifically noting that his economic reforms were aimed at restructuring the country.
The committee reiterated its full support for Tinubu’s administration’s initiatives in the areas of governance, economic reforms, national security, and infrastructure development.
Tinubu had announced the removal of petrol subsidies on May 29, 2023, which contributed to a sharp increase in Nigeria’s headline inflation rate, reaching 33.95% in May, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS data indicated a year-on-year increase of 11.54% compared to May 2023, when the rate was 22.41%.
The NBS report also disclosed that in May 2024, the Food inflation rate stood at 40.66% on a year-on-year basis, registering a 15.84% rise compared to May 2023 (24.82%).
Despite the surging inflation, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) implemented restrictive monetary policies, drawing criticism from the World Bank.
Additionally, various tax measures were imposed by the apex bank to boost revenue.
In the midst of all this, the Federal Government is currently in a standoff with the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress over a new minimum wage.
Despite labour’s rejection, the government insisted on N62,000 as the minimum wage.
The committee in the communiqué also lauded the president for his commitment to the coastal road project and the initiation of construction from both project ends.
The communiqué revealed the formation of a reconciliation committee in the South-South region, led by Sen Bassey Out, the Coordinator of the South-South geopolitical zone, to bridge gaps, encourage collaboration, and strengthen the party’s presence in the region.
Moreover, the committee vowed to leverage party resources to secure more states, especially focusing on the upcoming elections in Edo State.
It also resolved to promote the All Progressives Congress’s e-registration program by raising awareness for increased inclusivity, participation, and party ownership.
Furthermore, the communiqué expressed confidence in the President of the Senate, Sen (Dr) Godswill Akpabio, as the APC Leader in the zone, along with Victor Giadom and other zonal executive members.
The meeting concluded by urging all party members to actively engage in reconstructing and fortifying the APC in the region.
