Tiger Woods has pleaded no contest to a reduced reckless-driving charge in Florida, bringing an end to the legal case stemming from his March DUI arrest.

Woods appeared in court on Wednesday, September 2, accompanied by his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, the former daughter-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The 50-year-old golfer initially pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence but accepted a plea deal that reduced the charge to reckless driving.

As part of the agreement, a Florida judge suspended Woods’ driver’s licence for five years and ordered him to pay $1,500 in fines. He was also warned that driving during the suspension could result in immediate imprisonment.

Despite the suspension, Woods is still permitted to operate a golf cart under Florida law.

According to Yahoo Sports, during a conference, President Donald Trump addressed the case after being asked for his thoughts on Woods’ plea deal.

“I know Tiger very well. He’s a great guy, uh, he’s unique in so many ways, especially as an athlete, but also as a man. You know, he suffers great pain, great pain. It’s a very tough situation because they didn’t find alcohol on him,” Trump said.

“You know, he didn’t test positive at all for alcohol. But he, because of his horrible back, because he had a, in my opinion, a bad doctor, but he had a back operation that did not work out well, and he is under pain and so it’s a tough deal when you’re taking a painkiller because you’re under pain and you have a problem and you test positive, he would have told him that. I mean, it’s a prescription painkiller… he’s just a very special guy. I’m glad that was resolved.”

Woods’ longtime manager, Mark Steinberg, added, “He is continuing his treatment and prioritizing all aspects of his health,” after his court proceedings were finalized.
