What began as a royal installation in Lagos has now become a legal dispute, after a court moved to set aside the installation of Oba Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu as the Onise of Ise Kingdom.

The Lagos State Government had installed Saliu as the monarch in August, presenting him with the Staff of Office and Instrument of Appointment. But the installation has since come under legal challenge, with a Lagos High Court issuing an interim order affecting the process.

Here are seven things to know about the dispute:

1. Lagos installed a new Onise of Ise

The Lagos State Government installed Prince Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu as the new Onise of Ise Kingdom on August 21, 2026.

The installation was part of the state’s formal recognition of a new traditional ruler for the Ise community.

2. Saliu received the Staff of Office

During the ceremony, the new monarch was presented with the Staff of Office and Instrument of Appointment by the Lagos State Government.

The documents formally signalled the state’s recognition of Saliu as the Onise of Ise.

3. He succeeded the late Oba Ganiu Adebowale Adegbesan

Saliu emerged to succeed the late Oba Ganiu Adebowale Adegbesan, who died before the conclusion of the succession process.

His emergence subsequently led to the formal installation by the state government.

4. Ise Kingdom is in the Lekki/Ibeju-Lekki axis

Ise Kingdom is located in the Lekki/Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

The community is one of the traditional settlements within the rapidly developing corridor of the state.

5. The installation is now the subject of a court dispute

The August installation has since been challenged in court.

A Lagos High Court subsequently issued an interim order setting aside the installation pending the determination of the substantive suit.

6. Court orders temporary withdrawal of Staff of Office

The court also ordered the temporary withdrawal of the Staff of Office presented to Saliu by the Lagos State Government.

The order is intended to preserve the status quo while the legal dispute over the monarch’s installation is being determined.

7. Final decision is still pending

The court’s intervention does not represent a final determination of the substantive dispute over who should occupy the Onise throne.

The legal proceedings will determine the next steps concerning Saliu’s installation and the succession to the traditional stool.

For now, the August installation remains caught up in a legal battle, leaving the future of the Onise of Ise throne subject to the outcome of the court proceedings.
