A nine-year-old student from Offa, Kwara State, Charlotte Muritala, is attracting attention on TikTok for using short online lessons to help other children understand mathematics.
Charlotte, a JSS2 student, has built a following of about 80,000 on the platform, where she teaches topics including algebra, fractions and the lowest common multiple.
Using a whiteboard, marker and smartphone, the young mathematics enthusiast breaks down complex topics into simple steps for her audience.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Charlotte said her passion for mathematics started when she was five years old, attributing her interest to her love for numbers.
“I started liking mathematics when I was small. I love mathematics because I enjoy numbers,” she said.

She explained that she approaches difficult mathematical problems by breaking them down into smaller parts and applying different methods until she finds a solution.
“First, I like breaking them into small parts. That makes it easier for me. So I break it into small part, then I solve it. Once I start solving the hard problem, if I am not getting it, I will go and choose the best method and start solving it step by step,” Charlotte said.
Despite acknowledging that some mathematical questions can be difficult, she said she considers the subject enjoyable rather than burdensome.
“Mathematics is fun for me. Some questions are hard, but I like solving them,” she said.
Charlotte said her mother played a key role in helping her reach other young learners by creating a platform where she could share her knowledge.
“My mum created another platform for me to share what I know with other children. I feel very happy and proud of myself,” she said.
Her father also described Charlotte as a child who takes her studies seriously, particularly mathematics.
“She’s always with mathematics. Every time, she’s always learning, reading every time,” he said.
He, however, noted that Charlotte still makes time to enjoy activities expected of a child her age.
“So she’s a child, and she’s still nine years old. Sometimes she plays, but when it comes to reading, she doesn’t joke with it,” he said.
Charlotte’s mathematics teacher described her as a brilliant and outstanding student with exceptional mathematical abilities and a strong passion for solving problems.
The teacher also called for greater support for children with exceptional academic abilities through qualified teachers, scholarships and adequate funding.
“She is a brilliant and erudite student. Before taking someone as erudite, that means that person has exceptional skills in Mathematics. She has a passion for solving mathematical problems. In all, she is an excellent and outstanding student. If you want students to have interest in mathematics, secure the services of qualified teachers, give them scholarships and proper funding,” the teacher said.
Charlotte, meanwhile, encouraged children who struggle with mathematics to remain persistent and continue practising.
“My advice to them is to never give up. They should keep practising every day and not be afraid of mistakes,” she said.
