“It’s very important” — Dangote explains why Nigerians should buy refinery shares

Afrobeats star Davido has asked billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote why it is important for Nigerians to buy shares in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Davido posed the question during a recent interaction with Dangote in New York, where the two were seen together as the refinery’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) was being promoted on a Nasdaq digital billboard in Times Square.

Responding, Dangote said wider ownership of the refinery would help spread prosperity and wealth across Africa.

“Well, it’s very important because that is the only way to spread prosperity and worth throughout Africa. And like I said, this is not going to be the first and the last. We will continue with even our fertilizer. By the time we finish listing, every single one will own part of our businesses and we will create a pool of cash…”

Davido then thanked the businessman, saying, “Thank you, sir.”

The appearance came amid the ongoing Dangote Refinery IPO, which opened on September 14 and is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.

The offer comprises 4.1 billion shares priced at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares, meaning eligible investors can participate from ₦5,250.

The refinery has been promoted as a “people’s IPO,” with Dangote saying the offering is intended to broaden ownership and allow ordinary Nigerians and other eligible investors to acquire stakes in the business.

The Times Square appearance placed the Nigerian-owned refinery’s IPO on one of New York’s most prominent digital advertising locations, with the billboard carrying the message, “Made in Nigeria. Built for the World.”
