Bishop killed in South Africa, consulate demands justice

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has condemned the killing of a Nigerian national, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, in Johannesburg, South Africa, urging authorities in the country to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The Consulate expressed its position in a press statement dated September 11, 2026, signed by the Consul General, Ambassador (Mrs) Niniknawa Okey-Uche.

According to the mission, Fakunle was killed on September 4, 2026, at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, by unidentified assailants.

Describing the incident as a “gruesome murder,” the Consulate said the killing had left the deceased’s family, members of the Nigerian community and diplomatic missions in South Africa shocked and deeply saddened.

The mission expressed particular concern over the recurrence of similar incidents involving Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, saying Fakunle’s death had further raised questions about the safety of foreigners living in the country.

It noted that circumstances surrounding the killing had also raised concerns that the attack may have been targeted, alleging that the assailants traced Fakunle to his residence, shot him several times and burgled the property.

The Consulate called on relevant South African authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted.

It also urged the South African government to adopt “sterner measures” to protect Nigerians living in the country and safeguard their properties.

The reaction comes amid wider concerns over the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, where periodic anti-migrant sentiments and attacks have continued to raise diplomatic concerns.

While mourning Fakunle’s death, the Nigerian mission urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant about their personal security.

The Consulate also drew attention to a September 30 deadline reportedly issued by an anti-migrant group for foreigners to leave South Africa, saying its appeal for calm was being made in the aftermath of Fakunle’s killing and against the backdrop of the development.

The mission extended its deepest condolences to Fakunle’s family and prayed for the repose of his soul.

It further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and ensuring the fair treatment of Nigerians residing in South Africa.
