Artificial Ripening of Fruits: Osinbajo’s Wife Revelation

A revelation by former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo about his wife, Dolapo Osinbajo, and a batch of freshly squeezed orange juice has renewed concerns about artificial ripening of fruits and the safety of produce consumed by Nigerians.

Osinbajo said his wife developed unusual headaches after she began drinking freshly squeezed orange juice daily, following her decision to stop taking carbonated drinks. The family subsequently sent a batch of the juice for laboratory testing after considering other possible causes of the headaches.

According to Osinbajo, the laboratory result showed that the orange juice was not fit for human consumption.

What Osinbajo Said About His Wife’s Orange Juice

Osinbajo made the disclosure on August 28 at the Open Day for Gardeners’ Seminar in Lagos, where he spoke about concerns surrounding the use of chemicals in agriculture, fruit preservation and artificial ripening.

He said the family became concerned about his wife’s recurring headaches after she adopted freshly squeezed orange juice as part of her daily routine.

“The results came back. It showed that the orange juice, freshly squeezed, was not fit for human consumption,” Osinbajo said.

However, Osinbajo did not publicly release the laboratory report or identify the specific substance detected in the orange juice.

It therefore cannot be independently established from his public account that the orange juice caused Dolapo Osinbajo’s headaches or that calcium carbide was the contaminant found in the sample.

The distinction is important because concerns about artificial ripening of fruits should not automatically be presented as proof that a particular fruit or food product caused a person’s illness.

Calcium Carbide And Artificial Ripening Of Fruits

Osinbajo used the experience to draw attention to concerns over the alleged use of chemicals by some farmers and produce sellers to accelerate the ripening of fruits.

One substance frequently associated with the practice is calcium carbide, which has been linked to the artificial ripening of fruits including bananas, mangoes, pawpaw and tomatoes.

Industrial calcium carbide can contain impurities such as arsenic, lead and phosphorus compounds. These contaminants are among the reasons health and food-safety experts have raised concerns about the inappropriate use of the substance on food.

This is different from controlled food-grade ethylene, which is a recognised ripening agent. Industrial calcium carbide is not considered an appropriate substitute for regulated fruit-ripening methods.

A review published in Toxicology also examined concerns surrounding commercial calcium carbide and the presence of potentially toxic impurities.

Osinbajo cited a 2024 study conducted in Ado-Ekiti, where 10 of 20 fruit sellers interviewed reportedly said they used calcium carbide.

A separate study among fruit sellers in Uyo found that 25 per cent of respondents reported using the chemical.

More recent Nigerian research has also examined the issue.

A 2026 study involving calcium-carbide-ripened pineapple, orange and banana detected chromium, lead and arsenic in sampled fruits. The researchers, however, reported that the measured concentrations were below the referenced permissible limits and that estimated daily intake remained below the stated reference doses.

The findings do not establish that every artificially ripened fruit is poisonous.

Rather, they point to the need for proper control of chemicals used during fruit production and the enforcement of food-safety standards.

Experts Warn About Possible Health Risks

Dr Bidemi Ojeleye, who spoke to The Trumpet about artificially ripened fruits, warned that calcium carbide could contain impurities including arsenic, lead and phosphorus.

Ojeleye said exposure to such contaminants could pose serious health risks, including possible effects on vital organs.

He also listed possible symptoms associated with exposure as mouth and nose irritation, vomiting, weakness and skin damage.

Consultant family physician Dr Abdulrahim Abdulrashed similarly warned about the potential dangers associated with calcium carbide because of possible traces of arsenic and phosphorus.

“The chemical is very dangerous and its consumption is deadly,” Abdulrashed said, adding that chemical residues could remain in fruits after treatment.

Nutritionist Dr Grace Olasumbo also urged consumers to exercise caution when buying fruits that show unusual colour patterns.

However, experts caution that appearance alone cannot establish whether a fruit has been artificially ripened or treated with a dangerous chemical.

NAFDAC’s Warning On Artificially Ripened Fruits

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has previously warned Nigerians against using calcium carbide to ripen fruits because of potential public-health concerns.

The agency has also warned that fruits treated with calcium carbide may appear ripe externally while remaining comparatively unripe inside.

The warning places greater responsibility on regulators, farmers, traders and food handlers to ensure that chemicals used in food production meet approved safety standards.

Nigerians React To Osinbajo’s Revelation

Osinbajo’s disclosure triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing concern about the safety of fruits and other food products sold in the country.

Some users said the revelation had made them reconsider eating certain fruits.

One user, @Dannyrockie, wrote: “I am not taking oranges again in this country. And that goes for all other juicy fruits.”

Another user, @TadyJerry, questioned the apparent contradiction between the perception of fruits as healthy foods and concerns about how some produce is handled.

“‘Natural’ orange is now more harmful than Coca-Cola? Omooo. The world has truly gone insane,” the user wrote.

Other Nigerians shared personal experiences involving fruits they believed had caused stomach discomfort or other symptoms.

However, some reactions shifted the discussion towards Osinbajo’s record in government and the role of public authorities in regulating food safety.

@Bellebliss44 questioned why the former vice-president was raising the issue after leaving office.

“This happened to his own wife, but he didn’t do anything about it when he was in Aso Rock. Now that he’s out, he’s talking about it publicly. Ok,” the user wrote.

Another user, @chinemelum, focused on the difficulty ordinary Nigerians face in identifying unsafe food products.

“So what becomes of the poor Nigerians who cannot afford to take their orange juice to a lab for testing?” the user asked.

Other users directed their criticism at Nigeria’s regulatory system, arguing that government agencies should do more to identify unsafe food products before they reach consumers.

The range of reactions shows that Osinbajo’s disclosure has grown beyond the reported experience involving his wife. It has reopened a broader conversation about food safety, chemical use in agriculture and the effectiveness of regulatory oversight in Nigeria.

Can Consumers Identify Chemically Ripened Fruits?

Consumers should be careful about drawing conclusions from the appearance of fruits.

Unusual colouration, rapid ripening, a particular taste or other visible characteristics cannot, on their own, prove that a fruit has been treated with calcium carbide or another harmful chemical.

Likewise, washing fruits under clean running water can remove dirt and some surface contamination, but it cannot guarantee the removal of chemical residues or replace proper food-safety controls.

Laboratory testing remains the more reliable way to establish the presence and concentration of specific chemical contaminants.

What Exactly Was Found In The Orange Juice?

At the centre of the controversy is one unanswered question: what exactly was found in the orange juice consumed by Osinbajo’s wife?

Until the laboratory report or the specific contaminant is publicly identified, the reported finding should remain an allegation rather than proof that calcium carbide or another chemical caused her symptoms.

That caution is particularly important because the concerns surrounding artificial ripening of fruits involve several different practices and chemicals, which should not be treated as identical.

The episode has nevertheless drawn attention to a wider food-safety concern.
