2027: APC Governors Reject Wike’s Rainbow Coalition

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum has rejected political alliances and arrangements capable of weakening the ruling party or undermining President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, in an apparent response to the “Rainbow Coalition” associated with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The position was reached during a closed-door meeting of the governors in Abuja on or around September 15, 2026, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

In its resolution, the governors said members “will not participate in, support, or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the reelection of Mr. President, weakening the APC, or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.”

The forum warned that such political arrangements could create “confusion, divided loyalty, or competing interests” within the APC.

Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Sparks Concern

Wike’s “Rainbow Coalition”, also referred to as the National Rainbow Coalition, is a cross-party political platform he has promoted with a focus on Rivers State and wider implications for the 2027 elections.

Wike has said the coalition is intended to support President Tinubu’s re-election while also backing what he considers capable candidates across different political parties for other elective positions.

The arrangement has reportedly involved support for candidates contesting National Assembly and state-level elections under platforms outside the APC.

However, some APC stakeholders have expressed concern that such arrangements could confuse voters, encourage ticket-splitting and weaken the party’s candidates in governorship and legislative contests.

Concerns have particularly been raised around political dynamics in Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River states.

Wike has publicly accused Governor Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, of working against him.

The minister has maintained that his support for Tinubu does not prevent him from backing preferred candidates in other elections. He has also dismissed critics who question his political influence and ability to deliver electoral support.

Earlier, the APC Grassroots Governance Organization criticised the Rainbow Coalition, describing it as a potential political structure capable of creating divisions within the APC.

The group also drew comparisons between Wike’s current political activities and his role in the G5, also known as the Integrity Group, within the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2023 general election.

APC Unity Takes Centre Stage Ahead Of 2027

The latest development underscores continuing political friction between Wike, who remains a member of the PDP while serving in the APC-led Federal Government, and sections of the APC hierarchy.

The disagreements centre on party discipline, political structures in key states and competing strategies for the 2027 elections.

The APC Governors’ Forum’s resolution signals a collective effort by governors to prioritise party unity, protect APC candidates and ensure that political alliances do not undermine the party’s electoral interests ahead of the 2027 general election.
