Filip Hrgovic produced a stunning comeback to defeat Moses Itauma and end the 21-year-old Briton’s hopes of becoming a heavyweight world champion in a dramatic contest at London’s O2 Arena.
According to the BBC, Itauma dominated much of the bout and dropped Hrgovic in the second round, but his relentless pace eventually took its toll. The Croatian survived the early onslaught before turning the fight around in the ninth round.
Itauma had entered the contest as a heavy favourite after winning his first 14 professional fights and earning a reputation as one of heavyweight boxing’s brightest prospects.
The vacant IBF heavyweight title was at stake, with victory set to make Itauma the second-youngest world champion in the division’s history.
The southpaw started aggressively, using his speed to land several clean combinations and straight lefts as Hrgovic struggled to match his movement.
In the second round, Itauma caught Hrgovic with a right hook that forced the Croatian’s glove onto the canvas. The British fighter continued to dictate the action, but signs of fatigue began to emerge by the end of the third round.
Hrgovic gradually found his range and began landing heavier punches, although Itauma continued to respond with combinations. Despite taking some solid shots, the Briton remained well ahead on the scorecards.

Itauma continued to search for a knockout instead of settling into a more measured approach. His attack backed Hrgovic towards the ropes in the eighth round, but the Croatian absorbed the punishment while Itauma increasingly appeared exhausted.
The momentum changed dramatically in the ninth round when Hrgovic landed a powerful right hand that sent Itauma stumbling backwards.
Itauma managed to remain on his feet, but his legs appeared unsteady and he struggled to defend himself as Hrgovic increased the pressure.
When Itauma slumped into his corner, his team threw in the towel, prompting referee Howard Foster to stop the fight.
Itauma required medical attention after the bout and was taken from the arena on a stretcher.
Hrgovic, an Olympic bronze medallist, secured one of the biggest victories of his career and became Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion. His only previous professional defeat had come against Daniel Dubois.
“I knew I was losing the round, but I knew that I had the pace in my favour. He needs more experience, but he is one of a kind,” Hrgovic said.
The Croatian also revealed that he noticed Itauma tiring from the opening rounds and deliberately waited for his opportunity to apply pressure.
“From the first round, I saw his gassing out. He started fast. I knew he was going to gas out. I knew when my chance came I needed to push. That is what I did,” he added.
Hrgovic acknowledged Itauma’s quality, describing him as the best opponent he had faced while insisting that the young Briton still needs more experience.
“I am the present. He is definitely the future,” Hrgovic said.
Hrgovic will now face Frank Sanchez, the IBF mandatory challenger, while a potential unification clash could follow involving WBO champion Daniel Dubois.
For Itauma, a fight that was expected to confirm his status as heavyweight boxing’s next major star instead became a painful lesson.
Promoter Frank Warren suggested Itauma may have been carrying a leg injury during the final round but remained confident the youngster could recover from the setback.
“Moses gave everything,” Warren said. “He has to go back to the drawing board and he can come again.”
Despite the defeat, Itauma remains one of the youngest prospects in the heavyweight division and has considerable time to rebuild his career. The loss, however, has ended his unbeaten run and removed the aura of invincibility that had surrounded him.
