Bruno Fernandes delivered a stunning captain’s performance, scoring a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to cruise past Ipswich Town.
Ipswich, buoyed by their victory over Sunderland on their Premier League return the previous weekend, took the lead through Leif Davis, who produced an excellent half-volley after impressive work on the wing from Abdul Fatawu.
United quickly turned the game around after Marcelino Nunez slipped, allowing the hosts to launch a counter from a corner. Matheus Cunha picked out Fernandes, who calmly finished to level the contest.
The hosts then moved ahead when Harry Maguire’s effort took a deflection off Jacob Greaves and found the net for an own goal. Although the ball had struck Maguire’s arm during the build-up, the goal stood because the United defender was not the player who scored.
Greaves was involved again moments later, bringing down Cunha inside the area and conceding a penalty. Fernandes stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to put United 3-1 ahead.
The United skipper completed his hat-trick after Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo both saw their efforts blocked, with Fernandes reacting quickest to the loose ball to find the net.

Fernandes then turned provider, sending Mbeumo through with a clever ball over the top. The Cameroonian’s effort struck the crossbar before bouncing over the line to extend United’s advantage to 5-1.
Ipswich managed a late consolation when Julio Enciso delivered a cut-back for substitute Chuba Akpom, who finished to reduce the deficit.
The victory capped a dominant comeback for United, with Fernandes at the centre of the hosts’ attacking display.
