27 motorists prosecuted for traffic offences in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has prosecuted 27 motorists arrested for allegedly violating various road traffic laws under its ongoing Operation Velvet.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam.
He said the offences committed by the affected motorists included overloading, driving without valid driver’s licences and using unauthorised tinted permits, among other traffic violations.
The motorists were arrested and their vehicles impounded during the enforcement exercise being conducted across the state to promote road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
The statement said the vehicles were impounded in accordance with the law, while the suspects were subsequently charged before the appropriate courts for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, said the operation was not targeted at any individual or group but was aimed at promoting discipline among motorists, protecting lives and property, and ensuring strict adherence to road traffic laws.
He urged motorists across Jigawa to always obtain and carry valid driver’s licences, avoid overloading, and comply with vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements.
The police boss also warned motorists against the use of unauthorised tinted permits, stressing the need for road users to operate within the confines of the law.
The command said Operation Velvet would be sustained and extended to all parts of the state, including major towns, highways, feeder roads and other strategic locations.
It further called on members of the public to cooperate with police personnel and other relevant agencies during the enforcement exercise, assuring law-abiding motorists that they had nothing to fear.
