Ugboju: Alia condemns fresh Benue killings, says attackers will face justice
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has condemned the fresh attack on the Efeyi community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area, vowing that those responsible will be brought to justice.
The governor expressed sadness over the attack, which was allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders in the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of several residents and leaving many others with varying degrees of injuries.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia described the attack as a crime against the peaceful people of Benue State, insisting that the perpetrators would pay for their actions.
He also commended the Benue State Police Command for its swift response to the incident, which led to the neutralisation of two suspected attackers during a gun battle.
According to the statement, police operatives deployed to the area after receiving reports of the attack engaged the fleeing suspects in a shootout. Two of the suspects, who were allegedly providing cover for others to escape, were killed during the exchange.
Governor Alia assured residents that his administration would continue to support security agencies in their efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and protect lives and property.
“The bandits must pay for their crime against the peaceful people of our state,” the governor said.
He reiterated that Benue belonged to its people and warned those seeking to displace residents through violence to abandon such ambitions.
“Benue land is for Benue people. Those who think they can come and push the people away and take over should think twice.
“Our people are peaceful and hardworking. I was elected to protect them, and I must do everything legitimately possible to ensure they are protected and that our land is secured,” he said.
