Obidients Accuse Ali Modu Sheriff Of Sponsoring Boko Haram Insurgency

The Obidient Movement has accused the former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, of funding the Boko Haram insurgency following the attack on the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi.

NEWSNGR reports that Sheriff, during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, slammed Peter Obi over his call for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation due to worsening insecurity and economic hardship in the country.

Sherrif said Peter Obi wants to divide Nigeria because he believes in Biafra, stressing that he had never condemned the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Media and Communications Directorate, the Obidient Movement accused Sheriff of avoiding questions about  Tinubu’s administration but resorted to discussions about the Nigerian Civil War and Peter Obi.

The movement alleged that Sheriff had been widely identified with the early rise and sponsorship of the Boko Haram insurgency, arguing that he lacked the moral authority to lecture Nigerians on patriotism and national loyalty.

According to the group, Peter Obi supports a united Nigeria and believes that grievances should be addressed through dialogue, justice and the rule of law.

The group further stated that Peter Obi has consistently advocated national unity and inclusive development, citing his support for businesses across regional and religious lines, including investments in northern Nigeria during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank.

Part of the statement read, “It is deeply ironic that Ali Modu Sheriff, a man widely identified with the early rise and sponsorship of the Boko Haram insurgency that devastated the North, now wants to lecture anyone on patriotism and national loyalty.

“Perhaps what truly frightens him and others like him is the knowledge that a Peter Obi administration will dismantle the lucrative insecurity industry from which merchants of chaos and political profiteers have benefited for years.” 

The statement also accused defenders of the Tinubu administration of using ethnicity, religion and historical events to divert attention from what it described as the country’s current challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship and rising hunger.
