“I paid ₦50,000 to buy back my own iPhone” – Man recounts shocking theft experience in Lagos

A Nigerian man has shared how he was forced to buy back his own iPhone for ₦50,000 after it was allegedly stolen by a visitor at his game centre in Lagos.

According to him, the incident happened at his game space in Ikoyi when a man, who claimed he was waiting for a friend, joined them in trying out a new game.

The man said he later discovered that his phone had disappeared and immediately checked CCTV footage, where he recognised the thief because he had recorded him while he was playing.

“I woke up with my phone, but by night I bought it back for ₦50,000. The guy came to our game space, played games with us, then left with my phone. When I checked Find My iPhone, it was off. Later, it came online on Lagos Island,” he narrated.

Instead of involving the police, he decided to trace the phone himself after military officers reportedly demanded ₦120,000 before assisting him.

Following the location on his laptop, he moved around Lagos Island showing the suspect’s picture to people until he was told the phone had already been sold.

“Phone wey I buy for millions of naira, I had to pay ₦50,000 to buy it back from the person he sold it to. Apple really saved me. If not for Find My iPhone, I probably wouldn’t have seen it again,” he added.

His experience has sparked reactions online, with many praising Apple’s tracking feature while others warned Lagos residents to be extra careful with their valuables.

The man urged Nigerians to remain alert and always be aware of their surroundings, saying his experience showed just how quickly things can go wrong.
