“I buy Bugatti, dem ask which road I go drive am?” – Burna Boy responds to critics over ₦9bn Bugatti purchase
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has reacted to criticism surrounding his reported purchase of a custom one-of-one Venuum Widebody Bugatti Chiron said to be worth more than ₦9 billion.
The luxury vehicle has generated widespread conversation online, with many Nigerians debating its price tag and whether such a car is practical on the country’s roads.
The reported acquisition has been described by several social media users as one of the most expensive personal vehicles in West Africa.
While some fans praised the Afrobeats star for his success, others questioned the decision to spend such a huge amount on a luxury car instead of investing in projects with broader social impact.
The debate also reignited discussions about Nigeria’s road infrastructure, with critics arguing that owning an ultra-luxury hypercar offers limited value given the condition of many roads across the country.
Burna Boy addresses criticism on stage
During his performance at the Afronation concert in Portugal on Friday night, Burna Boy appeared to respond directly to the criticism through a freestyle.
The singer rapped, “I buy Bugatti, dem ask which road I go drive am? No be today we dey do road like Julius Berger.”
His remark suggested that concerns about Nigeria’s road network were nothing new and dismissed suggestions that the reported purchase was impractical because of local infrastructure.
Luxury car sparks fresh online debate
The discussion comes months after Burna Boy was linked to a public controversy involving socialite Sophia Egbueje, who that the singer promised to buy her a Lamborghini in exchange for intimacy but failed to do so.
Burna Boy never directly addressed the allegation but appeared to reference the issue in his song No Do, while Sophia later announced that she had purchased the luxury car herself.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy’s Bugatti purchase continues to divide opinion online, with supporters celebrating his achievements and critics questioning the relevance of such an expensive vehicle in Nigeria.
