Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially resigned, announcing his departure from office on Monday, June 22 less than two years after he took power.

In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said every decision he had taken in office had been driven by his love for the country, and that it was that same conviction guiding his resignation as Labour Party leader.

He confirmed that the process of selecting a new Labour leader would begin in July, while he would remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is in place, expected by September.

According to reports, Starmer spent the weekend at Chequers — the official countryside retreat for British prime ministers — with family and close allies, before making the announcement public on Monday.

His resignation comes amid mounting internal pressure within the Labour Party, significantly worsened by the landslide by-election victory of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham in Makerfield. Burnham secured 55 per cent of the vote — a result that Labour insiders say exposed just how much Starmer’s political standing had weakened.

Starmer, who assumed office in July 2024, had endured a turbulent tenure marked by policy reversals, ministerial scandals, and dwindling popularity among voters — all of which steadily eroded his grip on power in the months leading up to his exit.
