Rivers 2027: Opposition Leaders Plot Coalition Against Wike’s Camp

As Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration appears to be approaching its final stretch after years of political turmoil, attention has shifted to the next political battle in Rivers State and the search for a leadership structure capable of restoring stability and public confidence.

Consultations, alliances and political realignments are already said to be underway among key stakeholders seeking to build a formidable coalition ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The move, according to sources, is aimed at rallying behind a consensus candidate capable of challenging the political camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Prominent Rivers elders, political leaders and civil society actors dissatisfied with the outcome of the Fubara-Wike conflict are reportedly encouraging opposition candidates and their supporters to unite behind a common platform.

Those being discussed in the consultations include Gabriel Pidomson of the African Democratic Congress, an ally of former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi; Dumo Lulu-Briggs of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, reportedly backed by Peter Obi; and Farah Dagogo of the Atiku Abubakar faction of the ADC.

According to Guardian, sources said the goal is to avoid splitting opposition votes among several candidates and instead present a united front against whoever emerges from Wike’s political structure.

One source described the proposed movement as “Rivers People versus Wike,” saying the 2027 election should be driven by the desire of the electorate to reclaim political control rather than by entrenched interests.

However, Wike’s camp has maintained that the coalition around the minister remains firmly in control of the state’s political structure.

The camp insists that its alliance has the capacity to provide leadership and determine the direction of Rivers politics in 2027.

The Wike-backed rainbow coalition is said to include the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) and the Action Alliance (AA), with two other parties reportedly showing interest in joining.

There are indications that the coalition may review the candidature of Kingsley Chinda of the APC, who is widely regarded as a close ally of Wike.

Chinda’s emergence has generated debate in some quarters over the state’s long-standing zoning arrangement among the riverine, Ogoni and upland ethnic nationalities.

Wike recently said during a media chat that the coalition, and not him personally, would decide its preferred governorship candidate.

The PDP in Rivers State also has Sam Ejekwu as its governorship candidate, another figure believed to be loyal to the minister.

Political observers say the 2027 election will be a major test of whether Rivers State can move beyond the prolonged instability that followed the Fubara-Wike crisis.
