OOUTH Doctors Issue Strike Warning

Resident doctors at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State have issued a 10-day warning strike notice over unresolved welfare and remuneration issues, including the non-payment of revised professional and specialist allowances.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the hospital, announced the commencement of the warning industrial action after its second-quarter ordinary general meeting held on Monday in Sagamu.

In a communiqué released on Tuesday, signed by the association’s President, Dr. John Omotoso, the doctors expressed dissatisfaction with the Ogun State government’s failure to implement and pay the revised professional allowance and specialist allowance, as well as the outstanding arrears associated with the benefits.

According to the communiqué, the association had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the hospital authorities but said no memorandum of understanding had been signed and no concrete commitment had been made regarding the implementation of its demands.

The resident doctors also raised concerns over the delay in the payment of the 2026 medical residency training fund, despite its adoption by the state government, and cited a severe shortage of medical personnel, which they said has increased workloads and prolonged working hours across departments.

Other grievances include recurring incidents of theft and security breaches within the hospital, inadequate security infrastructure, poor condition of doctors’ call rooms and accommodation facilities, and what the association described as substandard call meals.

Following deliberations, members unanimously resolved to embark on the 10-day warning strike, while demanding the immediate release of the 2026 medical residency training fund and the inclusion of the revised professional allowance and specialist allowance in the July 2026 salary payments.

The association also called for urgent improvements to the hospital’s security system, including better lighting and strengthened perimeter fencing, as well as the renovation of doctors’ call rooms and accommodation facilities and an upgrade in the quality and quantity of meals provided during duty calls.

In addition, the ARD warned that any member who fails to comply with the strike directive would be liable to a ₦50,000 sanction in line with the association’s resolution.

The resident doctors said they would convene an emergency general meeting at the end of the warning strike, to assess the government’s response and decide on the next course of action.
