The Federal Government has declared June 29 to July 3, 2026 as the National Learning Assessment Week, marking a key step toward Nigeria’s first nationwide education survey covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The announcement was contained in a press statement issued on Thursday by the Federal Ministry of Education through its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.

According to the ministry, the National Learning Assessment Week is designed to generate credible and comparable data on learners’ performance nationwide. The data will guide policy reforms, education planning, and improved resource allocation across the sector.

The ministry emphasized that the exercise is strictly diagnostic in nature and will not be used for student promotion, placement, or certification decisions.

Preparations for the nationwide assessment began in 2025 through collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), UNICEF, and the World Bank. The ministry added that assessment tools have been developed, pilot-tested, and field personnel adequately trained.

The exercise will be conducted in selected schools across the country and will target learners in Primary 3, Primary 5, Junior Secondary School 2 (JS2), and Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2).

Subjects to be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a major reform milestone aimed at strengthening accountability in Nigeria’s education system and improving learning outcomes through evidence-based decision-making.

The Federal Government expressed confidence that the National Learning Assessment Week will provide reliable national data to support long-term improvements in education quality across the country.
