A former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri has lashed out at a former presidential candidate, Peter Obi to stop demarketing Nigeria because he lost an election.

Obi had hailed Tanzania for its exploit in electricity generation and berated Nigeria for failing to provide electricity for its teeming citizens.

Obi had on 26 April said he read a report in the media on how Tanzania recently shut down five hydroelectric stations to reduce excess electricity in the national grid. “Their decision to shut down these power stations stemmed from the fact that their electricity production was already enough to power their major cities and give electricity access to the rural dwellers. “In pain, I wondered how our nation, the giant of Africa, could not be able to power even one of the major cities, for example, the capital Abuja, while Tanzania has succeeded in powering all their major cities,” Obi mocked. But Omokri in a tweet on X on Monday said according to the just released data from the National Bureau of Statistics, electricity supply in Nigeria has increased by 12.3% in the last quarter. “This is higher than the increase in supply in Tanzania within the same period. In fact, electricity supply actually reduced in Tanzania in the fourth quarter of 2023, due to the drought that affected Tanzania last year (Tanzania depends on hydroelectricity) and led to severe rationing of power.

“Not only did the electricity supply in Nigeria increase, but also the total number of households that access electricity in Nigeria increased to 12.12 million, up from 11.71 million. An increase of 3.5%,” he said.

Omokri added: “Yet, Peter Obi was de-marketing Nigeria and praising Tanzania, all because of a sensational headline. Is this the type of leader Nigeria needs? One who can be triggered to attack his country because of a story he did not fact-check?

“The 700 megawatts Zungeru Dam is ready. By the time it goes fully on stream, electricity in Nigeria will improve further. Love your country enough not to de-market her because you lost an election.”
