2024 is an important year for the new DC Universe, and July might bring the best day for the franchise in two years. DC has had a rough going in the cinematic realm for the past decade. From 2013’s Man of Steel, which saw Superman controversially kill Zod, to 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, DC tried to replicate the success of other shared universes like DC’s own Arrowverse on TV and the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the DCEU. And while there were some great movies in the DCEU, the universe was not as good as expected.
The DCEU faltered for a variety of reasons, including creative vision, behind-the-scenes issues, and more. In the end, the shared universe failed to reach its potential. Thankfully, DC is not giving up the concept altogether, with new DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran starting their new DC Universe in 2024. The executives have already announced many of the projects in the DCU’s Chapter One; however, there are still a lot of major questions waiting to be answered, and July 27 might be the day when DC finally does so.
This July appears as the most likely month for when fans could finally get some of their burning DCU questions answered. That is because of San Diego Comic-Con, which is an annual event that celebrates all things comic book-related, including projects such as movies, series, animation, and games, which are all part of the DCU’s plans. San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H has become famous for hosting some of the biggest reveals from studios like Marvel and Warner Bros. over the years, and 2024 might be DC’s time to make a splash after two years.
After a 2022 panel that brought new looks at Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam, DC was absent from 2023’s San Diego Comic-Con. Last year’s absence was due to the Hollywood strikes, which delayed projects and blocked actors from appearing to promote projects. With the new DCU gearing ready to start, there are still many major characters to be cast and projects to be revealed, as Gunn has said that the 10 announced DCU projects make up less than half of Chapter One, and there is no better place than San Diego Comic-Con for such major reveals.
More than just July, it is possible to pinpoint the day the DCU’s next major announcements could be made. DC’s 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel could come on July 27. This year’s event will run from July 25 to July 28. Based on that, July 27 rises as the likely date for DC’s panel due to the comic book giant’s history with Hall H. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company behind DC, has a history of Hall H presentations on San Diego Comic-Con Saturdays, which works for the July 27, 2024, date.
A look at DC’s San Diego Comic-Con history at Hall H makes that prediction more clear. As was said before, 2023’s event did not have DC — or even Marvel — present at Hall H due to the Hollywood strikes. In 2022, the Warner Bros. panel took place on a Saturday. In 2020 and 2021, there were no physical events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, DC movies did not have a presence at SDCC; however, in the years before that, including 2018, 2017, 2016, and more, DC’s Hall H presentation was always on a Saturday.
The 2024 San Diego Comic-Con has the potential to bring to life some anticipated DC reveals. The first movie in the DCU is James Gunn’s Superman. While production on the movie is underway, the first look at David Corenswet in costume as the Man of Steel has yet to be revealed. Hall H could see the debut of the first footage from the movie, revealing more about Superman‘s story and the first look at Corenswet in full Superman costume, as well as a peek at the multiple other DCU heroes in the film.
Batman is another DC hero who could have a big SDCC. Casting announcements for director Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II and the DCU’s Batman reboot film The Brave and the Bold could be revealed. There have been many rumored names to play Bruce Wayne in the DCU, so revealing the new Batman in Hall H could finally put an end to the speculation. Characters like the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, Booster Gold, and more could also be cast. The first look at the animated Creature Commandos, the DCU‘s first project, is also likely for the event.
