Night Court star Melissa Rauch gives a hopeful update on a potential season 3. The series is a revival of the 1984 sitcom of the same name, which follows Judge Abby Stone’s (Rauch) experiences as she takes up the position of magistrate for Manhattan Criminal Court’s night shift, a role her late father once held. Its second season recently went out with a bang, ending with a wedding and an unexpected cliffhanger, which teased more to come.
In an interview with The Wrap, Rauch provided an update on Night Court season 3. While she could not definitively reveal whether season 3 will happen, Rauch confirmed she was open to returning to the show. In fact, she suggested she was open to making the show for as long as possible. Check out her statement below:
While Rauch didn’t confirm Night Court season 3, her interest in expanding the series is a positive sign. Given that they are executive producers, Rauch and her husband, Winston, may have some influence over whether the show continues. Meanwhile, Rauch seemingly isn’t the only one interested in another season. The writers and show creators also seem to be building up to continue Night Court, especially because of how season 2’s final twist and cliffhanger effectively set the stage for a significant storyline going forward.
Night Court season 2’s finale was quite the affair as it brought back Marsha Warfield’s Roz and featured her wedding to Loretta (Indira G. Wilson). As one of the stars of the original series, it is always a big occasion when Warfield reprises her role in the revival. However, while Roz’s story came full circle, the finale dropped a major twist for another character, Dan Fielding (John Larroquette). Abby and her boyfriend, Jake (Ryan Hansen), attend Roz’s wedding. While chatting with Jake’s mother, Stone is struck with the startling realization that Dan may be Jake’s biological father.
Although the twist was unexpected, it does make a good deal of sense. Given Dan’s womanizing ways, it has long been a mystery to viewers how he seemingly hadn’t fathered any children. Meanwhile, the paternity twist opens up a perfect storyline for Abby, Jake, and Dan in Night Court season 3. On top of that, the show’s relatively positive reviews and ability to maintain viewership through its second season also bode well for another. While Night Court season 3 isn’t officially confirmed, its strong potential storyline and cast and crew interest is a good sign.
