Mark Pellegrino & Alex Neustaedter Tease Father-Son Development In American Rust Season 2

Saved by Amazon after its Showtime cancelation, Prime Video will drop 10 new episodes of American Rust on March 28. The first season showed a significant rift between Virgil and Billy, as Virgil neglected his son’s needs and failed to nurture their relationship. However, actors Mark Pellegrino (Supernatural) and Alex Neustaedter (Colony) tease that viewers may see Virgil making more of a fatherly effort in upcoming episodes.

The American Rust season 2 trailer reveals that Billy wakes up from his coma, but that doesn’t mean he won’t have plenty of hurdles to overcome. The emotional aftermath of his time in prison will continue to linger along with any physical ailments he may have sustained from the assault. Billy will need his parents’ support more than ever, and Virgil’s attempts to mend their relationship could prove to be successful.

Mark Pellegrino and Alex Neustaedter chat with Screen Rant about their characters’ dynamic, Virgil’s true motives, and Billy’s romance with Lee in American Rust season 2.

Screen Rant: Alex, we see Billy in the season 2 trailer, so we know that he’s going to be somewhat okay after the finale, but how is he going to recover mentally from everything that he went through in prison?

On that same note, Virgil isn’t known for being the best father, but could we see some development on that front in season 2?

Virgil’s character isn’t black and white, so what do you feel his motives are? Are they self-serving? Do you think there’s a part of him that wants to do the right thing?

Isaac is back in town. Obviously, Billy cares about him, he cares about Isaac’s sister, but do you think Billy feels that he is the one to blame for Pete’s death?

His relationship with Lee is also getting more and more complicated. What can you say about that dynamic moving forward?

American Rust: Broken Justice takes us back to the fictional small town of Buell, Pennsylvania. Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) try to rebuild their lives after the harrowing events of Season One. Season Two picks up with a string of seemingly unrelated murders, hinting at a much larger conspiracy that threatens everyone in this small, tight-knit town.

Based on Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, the first season of American Rust premiered on Showtime, exploring the tattered American Dream in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania through the eyes of police chief Del Harris. Harris becomes compromised when the son of the woman he loves (Tierney) is accused of murder, and he is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.
