Revamp NIPOST to facilitate national development, Nigerians urge Communication Minister

Some Nigerians on social media have urged the honorable Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, to revamp the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to further facilitate national development.

This comes after the minister took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to ask Nigerians what they want their ideal NIPOST to look like.

In the X post late Tuesday, the minister posted a flier of NIPOST and captioned it, “As we innovate towards a stronger digital economy, the role of NIPOST cannot be underestimated. Please share some of your hopes for the ideal NIPOST in the comments #MyNIPOST #NigerianExcellence.”

Reacting to the post, hundreds of Nigerians took to the comment section to share their various perspectives on how NIPOST can be improved.

According to them, despite the importance of the digital economy, the role that post offices play in the country’s national development remains significant.

Reacting to the post, @KingKayoyo tweeted, “I thought I was the only one that was concerned about the role of Nipost in Nigeria’s development. Creating postcodes or a better house numbering system alongside efficient letter deliveries from Nipost can go a long way in enforcing compliance in several sectors including transport etc. Also, to build a very effective logistics delivery system locally and from abroad, Nipost must be a willing player.”

@hussaini_mshehu wrote, “NIPOST is in the best position to be the steward of verifiable Addresses Database. One challenge of last-mile services is the lack of a unique ID such as a Postal ID for easy delivery and/or collection of goods. If every house and business can have a unique Postal code instead of the district one we have today it will be great for other businesses to plug into.”

Another user, @Anthonyabidaku tweeted, “E-commerce Integration is paramount. NIPOST should actively support and integrate with e-commerce platforms to enhance online shopping experiences. This involves efficient last-mile delivery, returns management, and secure payment gateways.

“E-commerce integration for NIPOST is about aligning postal services with the needs of the booming online retail industry. It requires efficient logistics, secure payment solutions, and streamlined customs processes to support both businesses and consumers in the digital age. This integration can be a win-win, boosting e-commerce while revitalizing and modernizing postal services in Nigeria.

“If your ministry can revive NIPOST technologically to the level where Nigerians can trust its services more than many local private operators, then you’d be celebrated as an achiever in the Tinubu administration.” @OgbeniUlama opined.

@EdwardEnejoh wrote, “The ideal NIPOST should have a proper mapping of houses and be able to deliver mails to addresses. They should be reliable to deliver items safely without fear of items being lost, delayed or damaged. NIPOST has a role to play in access to finance. But I won’t go into details.”
