Why US troops were deployed to Nigeria

The Nigerian government has clarified the mission of the United States troops deployed to Nigeria.

The clarification comes after the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the deployment of a small team of US personnel to Nigeria earlier this week.

General Dagvin Anderson, the AFRICOM Commander, stated that the deployment was at Nigeria’s request and is strictly limited to intelligence assistance.

He highlighted that the United States was providing unique capabilities that only they could offer, underscoring the strategic partnership between both nations.

However, the announcement raised concerns and sparked public speculation about the potential infringement on Nigeria’s sovereignty.

In response, Nigeria’s defence minister, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), said that the US personnel were not combat troops. “Instead, the team consists of advisers providing intelligence gathering support and training.”

He refrained from revealing specifics about the team’s size, their arrival date, location, or the duration of their mission.

The development follows the December 2025 air interdiction operations carried out jointly by the US military and the Nigerian Armed Forces, targeting multiple locations in the North-West and North-Central regions as part of a broader effort to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

Despite the official clarifications, some Nigerians remain uneasy about foreign military presence in the country.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has weighed in, stating that the cooperation with the US is coordinated and does not jeopardize Nigeria’s sovereignty.

In an interview with ARISE Television, APC national publicity secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, reiterated that the collaboration is aimed at combating terrorism, which has caused significant suffering to Nigerians.

Morka assured that the US-Nigeria partnership does not undermine national independence, stressing that both governments are fully involved in all decision-making processes.

He dismissed the idea of foreign intervention, noting that in this case, Nigeria is in control of the decisions made and the actions taken on the ground.

He emphasized that the ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens and eradicate terrorist threats from the country.
