“No Shield For Misconduct” — NIS Orders Arrest, Probe Of Officer Linked To Alleged Sexual Assault Of 21-Year-Old Lady

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a comprehensive investigation following allegations that one of its personnel unlawfully detained and sexually assaulted a 21-year-old woman from Akwa-Ibom State.

In a statement on its official X handle on Thursday, the NIS responded to a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which detailed that on January 16, 2025, a routine trip from Port Harcourt to the Benin Republic reportedly turned into four days of detention and sexual assault at the Akere checkpoint in Badagry, Lagos State.

FIJ’s report identified the alleged perpetrator as an officer referred to as Makama, claiming he subjected the victim to intimidation, repeated sexual assault, and unlawful detention until her release on the following Monday.

The Immigration Service described the allegations as “extremely serious” and emphasised that any acts of misconduct by personnel are unacceptable and will be treated with the full severity of the law.

“The attention of the Nigeria Immigration Service has been drawn towards an online publication alleging grave misconduct by one of its personnel, including claims of unlawful detention and sexual assault involving a Nigerian woman. NIS considers these allegations extremely serious and stresses that any acts of misconduct are entirely unacceptable,” the statement read.

The Service confirmed that a thorough investigation has been ordered, and any personnel found culpable will face strict disciplinary and legal action. It also reiterated its commitment to protecting public trust and ensuring that the rights and dignity of individuals are not violated.
