INEC finalises 2027 election timetable, despite Electoral Act delay

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its preparedness for the 2027 general election despite delays in amending the Electoral Act.

Joash Amupitan, INEC chairman, spoke on Wednesday in Abuja during an engagement with civil society organisations.

The commission also said it has completed the timetable and schedule of activities for the polls while awaiting action by the national assembly on the proposed changes.

Amupitan said the commission had already forwarded its recommendations to lawmakers as part of efforts to strengthen the electoral framework.

He noted that the timing of the amendment process could still influence certain aspects of the election timetable.

According to him, some activities already outlined may require adjustment depending on when the national assembly concludes work on the revised law.

He stressed, however, that INEC remains committed to conducting a credible election in 2027.

Amupitan added that until the amended Electoral Act is passed and signed into law, the commission will continue to discharge its duties under the existing legal framework.
