A Catholic priest has issued a stern warning to couples planning to marry, emphasizing the importance of checking their genotypes before marriage.

Reverend Father Prince Chidi Philip, a Catholic priest based in the diaspora, stated that certain genotype combinations should never be overlooked, as they could lead to serious health consequences for future children.

Priest Refuses to Wed AS + AS Couples

In a lengthy post shared on Facebook, Father Philip declared that he would never officiate a marriage where both partners have the AS genotype.

He described this stance as “non-negotiable,” citing the risks associated with sickle cell disease in children born to such couples.

“AS + AS lovers must learn to pity not only their unborn children but also the friends, families, and communities who will inevitably carry the weight of avoidable suffering,” he wrote in part.

Love and Prayer Are Not Enough

The priest stressed that love and prayer alone are insufficient foundations for marriage.

“Love alone is not enough. Prayer alone is not enough. Faith without wisdom is not holiness, it is recklessness,” he added.

Urgent Call for Genotype Testing

Father Philip advised all couples to prioritize genotype testing early in their relationships.

He encouraged individuals to know their compatibility before committing emotionally or physically, noting that this step is crucial for the well-being of both their future children and the wider community.

“If you currently have a boyfriend, a girlfriend, or a partner you intend to marry, do not delay. Go now and check your genotype compatibility. Do it before emotions deepen, before plans are made, before families are involved, and before it becomes harder to accept the truth. Before you commit your heart, your body, and your future to any man or woman, verify your genotype compatibility. Not after engagement. Not after introduction. Not after emotions have already taken control. Before anything else, genotype first…” he stated.

Raising Awareness on Sickle Cell Disease

The priest’s warning comes amid ongoing efforts to educate Nigerians and others about the risks of sickle cell disease.
